Effective writing speeds the successful transfer of complex information. The Technical Writing Program, presented in four course modules, guides you through practical techniques to produce clear, readable memos, reports, procedures, and other technical documents.

Program Features

    • Module 1
      Convey maximum information in minimum space by applying these five strategies for clear, direct wording:
      1. Eliminate wordiness.
      2. Place key words in power positions.
      3. Use active and passive voice appropriately.
      4. Be specific.
      5. Avoid jargon and pompous wording.

    • Module 2
      Apply these three strategies to ensure reader-friendly documents:
      1. Use illustrations to complement and clarify the text.
      2. Use transitional words to improve flow.
      3. Use format to guide the reader: headings, numbered lists, and short paragraphs.

    • Module 3
      Use an efficient four-step writing process.

      Use your knowledge of each document's purpose, goal, and audience to:
      1. Write a subject heading that ensures your document is read.
      2. Begin and end documents effectively.
      3. Write appropriately for executive, expert, lay, and combined audiences.
      4. Gain cooperation and goodwill with reader-centered wording.

    • Module 4
      Apply three organizational techniques to ensure readable, usable documents:
      1. Use a Zero Draft to capture key ideas.
      2. Organize documents logically and strategically.
      3. Structure technical reports so that all audiences can access your information.
