Finding the Fix that Fits: Human Systems Dynamics at Work

Purchase This Program

This program includes the complete on-demand recorded series, available for access any time.

Change is changing. Words like resilience, adaptation, emergence, and transformation are liberally sprinkled throughout the latest theories and tools for change. But, what do these words mean? How can you see and influence the complex patterns that shape the future for individuals, teams, organizations, and communities today?

How can you increase performance in systems where:
  • Diversity is mind-boggling?
  • Change is constant?
  • Relationships are complicated?
  • Communications are virtual?

  • Join Glenda H. Eoyang, Ph.D., Executive Director of the Human Systems Dynamics Institute, for the complete on-demand series "Finding the Fix that Fits: Human Systems Dynamics at Work".

In this complex and fast-moving world, there is no one solution that's good enough. What works one day in one situation may be worse than nothing at another time and place. To find the "fix that fits," you need to understand what drives change. You need to have tools and techniques that help you generate options for action and pick the one that has the best chance of success right now. You need a theory base that helps you learn from the past to take action in the present that will inform the future you desire. You need human systems dynamics.

You will find the fix that fits when you:
  • Recognize when and why your old tools fail.
  • Name the patterns that shape complex change for you and your team.
  • Assess your situation and explore out-of-the-box options for action.
  • Develop a theory of change that embraces familiar tools while suggesting radical innovations.

  • These six sessions form a foundation for thinking and working differently with individuals, teams, organizations, and communities. You should consider attending if you:
  • Have heard about chaos and complexity and want to know what it means for you and your work.
  • Depend on your great intuition-except when it stops working.
  • Lead or manage people, processes, or resources in turbulent environments.
  • See yourself as a change agent, working in a challenging situation.

  • Complete Series

Session 1: Self-Organizing: Unleash the Power. Human systems organize themselves-sometimes for good and sometimes for ill. This session introduces you to the power and patterns of self-organizing in human systems. You will learn how to be an effective change agent in self-organizing systems

Session 2: Fingerprints of Chaos. Self-organizing systems can seem random and unpredictable, but a trained eye sees order in the chaos. You will learn seven characteristic patterns that shape behavior in self-organizing systems and how you can use those patterns to find the fix that fits

Session 3: Adaptive Action. Seeing the chaos around you is not enough. You and your team also have to take action. This session introduces a map to help you understand the territory and plan your most adaptive path of action.

Session 4: Mental Model Gymnastics. You only see what you expect to see. This session builds your capacity to shift your perspective and see new things in new ways. You will practice using your pattern recognition muscles to critique your own assumptions and those of your teammates.

Session 5: Seeing and Influencing. Human systems dynamics grows out of a radically new theory of change. This session introduces you to the theory and demonstrates how it has been used to innovate action in supervisory relationships, community development, education, leadership, and environmental activism.

Session 6: Shaping Possibilities. Self-organizing dynamics challenge traditional models of leadership and management. This session introduces tools and techniques to influence and shape behavior without taking the wind out of the self-organizing sails of change

Your Guide: Glenda H. Eoyang, Ph.D., is a master teacher with deep insights into the art and science of self-organizing systems. As a pioneer in the field of human systems dynamics, Eoyang applies principles of self-organizing to help people thrive in unpredictable environments. Since 1988, she has provided training, consulting, coaching, and facilitation support in both the public and private sectors. She is currently serving as founding Executive Director of the Human Systems Dynamics Institute, a network of professionals working at the intersection of complexity and social sciences. Her published works include numerous scholarly and practical articles, Coping with Chaos: Seven Simple Tools, Facilitating Organization Change: Lessons from Complexity Science, and Voices from the Field: An Introduction to Human Systems Dynamics.

Human systems dynamics (HSD) is a collection of concepts and tools that help make sense of the patterns that emerge from chaos when people work and play together in groups, families, organizations, and communities. HSD helps you see and influence patterns in human relationships. HSD Institute exists to sustain a network of individuals and organizations developing theory and practice in HSD, to change the world by changing how people think about the world.
