Business Writing Tips from The Writing Center

Business Grammar - Verb Tenses (4)
February 15, 2007

Wrapping up our rules on using verb tenses:

4.  If all actions in a sentence occur at the same time, use only one tense to describe those actions.

Not: The office needed a long conference table, but it also needs a display table.

But: The office needs a long conference table, but it also needs a display table

5.  If you are talking about two different times, use two different tenses.

Example: He had talked  to his supervisor before he proceeded.
