WHYY Wider Horizons Programs at ULiveandLearn

WHYY's Wider Horizons is an information and entertainment service for everyone looking forward to or living the second half of life-those planning a new career or retirement, active elders, children of aging parents, the homebound, and everyone interested in living a satisfying life enhanced by intellectual stimulation, lifelong learning and a continuing connection to the things and places they love.

ULiveandLearn has partnered with Wider Horizons since 2001 in offering live online events in support of programming initatives. The programs have included national outreach efforts with the Alzheimers Association, AARP, National Family Caregivers Association, Hospice foundation of America, including the first live webcast from the Kennedy Library in Boston.

WHYY's Wider Horizons Forum - Living with Grief: Coping with Public Tragedy
WHYY and Caring Community presents a Wider Horizons Forum featuring the Hospice Foundation of America's Tenth Annual Bereavement Teleconference Living with Grief: Coping with Public Tragedy, held April 30, 2003. Kicked off by keynote speaker and former Pennsylvania Governor Mark Schweiker, the forum examines the long-term implications of public tragedy and about effective interventions and resources available to those in need, especially children. WHYY artist-in-residence Mary Anne Bartley leads the group in an artistic experience to show the power of art in grief and healing. View the archive.

WHYY's Wider Horizons Forum on April 24, 2002 featured the Hospice Foundation of America's Ninth Annual Bereavement Teleconference Living with Grief: Loss in Later Life, hosted by Cokie Roberts. The Forum examined ways that professionals can better understand and respond to the needs of older persons coping with loss and making critical end-of-life decisions.

Advances in genetics herald astonishing possibilities for our health, our families, our work and our laws. WHYY presented a town meeting on "Our Genes / Our Choices" hosted by Glenn McGee, Ph.D. on January 22, 2003, which was webcast live. View the archive.

 

On October 20, 2003, Glenn McGee spoke with Marty Moss-Coane on WHYY's Radio Times about his new book "Beyond Genetics: Putting The Power of DNA to Work in your Life." The book explores the legal and ethical questions emerging from genetic science. McGee is a Professor of Medical Ethics and Associate Director of the Center for Bioethics at the University of Pennsylvania.

Caregiver Town Meeting:
Strengthening Families and Communities for Caregiving

WHYY joins forces with the National Family Caregivers Association as NFCA's media partner to webcast a series of national Town Meetings on Strengthening Families and Communities for Caregiving. NFCA's Town Meeting for the Philadelphia region was held at WHYY's Technology Center on November 20, 2002.


Living for Today, Planning for Tomorrow
The University of Pennsylvania's Alzheimer's Disease Center's first conference on October 18, 2002, was designed especially for individuals with dementia in the early stage and family members who care for someone at any stage. View the archive.

Changing the Culture of Long-Term Care, CARIE's 25th annual conference May 16, 2002 at WHYY. AARP Executive Director and CEO Bill Novelli delivered the keynote address. A panel of noted researchers examined why cultural change is needed to meet the challenge of providing quality long-term care to an aging population. View the archive.
